Sportsman of the Year
2023 Sportsman of the Year - Hayden Barney
On September 23 a father brought his two young sons River and Lucas to their first dirt track race. During the first heat of races the boys picked their favorite Driver and car. For River it was the #45 car driven by Hayden Barney and Lucas chose the 711 car driven by Payce Herrera. During the intermission the boys went down on track for the driver meet and greet. River wanted to go straight to the Black and Blue number 45. He walked around the car looking it over, then he got an autographed picture card from Hayden. River's father mentioned to Hayden that he was River's favorite driver. Hayden had a baseball hat sitting on top of his car and said here little guy you can have this. The boys continued there way along the track looking at the other cars. As the walked back towards the 45 to return to their seats Hayden ask River if he would like to sit in the drivers seat of his car. River jumped at the opportunity and immediately got in. The boys returned to their seats excited to watch the second heat of races. As the second round of races ended River was standing behind the flag stand cheering for Hayden since he had won the race. Hayden exited his car and was waiting to receive his trophy, River yelled out to him "Great job Hayden, way to go". Hayden looked up and say him standing there, he started motioning for him and yelled for him to come down on track. River went down for his trophy presentation and pictures then Hayden did something amazing. He handed his trophy to River and said you can have this bud. River looked up to his Dad still standing by the flag stand, in disbelief and yelled "He said I can Have it Dad". The whole ride home that night all River could talk about was Hayden and his newly gifted trophy. The next morning River's father reached out to Hayden on Facebook to express to him his tremendous appreciation for what Hayden had done for his son he wrote...
"Good morning Hayden. My name is Eric Hartle. I am the father of the young boy you gave your trophy to last night I wanted to reach out to you and express my gratitude for your wonderful act of kindness. I am in tears as I write this message to you. Last year we moved him to another school because of being bullied. My little boy has low self-esteem, and I truly believe your generosity and kindness will be a turning point in his life. He was on cloud nine and said it was the best day of his life." Hayden responded back "Thank you so much for sharing this with me Eric. I was just telling my family this morning that was the highlight of my weekend. This being only my second season of racing he is the first to tell me I am his favorite. I could see the excitement in his eyes when he got to come down on the track with me. If your not to far away or too busy today I am still at the track. I would be happy to take him for a ride before I load up and go home." They went back up to the track and Hayden Gave River and Lucas a ride in his car and had a mini race with Rick Maynard. Hayden has won the hearts of the entire Hartle family and is officially all of their favorite driver.
